THE CORE CONNECTIONS:

MONTESSORI AND SPECIAL EDUCATION

Maria Montessori’s educational philosophy aligns closely with the principles of modern special education, even though her work began before formal special education systems existed. Her work began with children with developmental differences, and her methods have continued to serve diverse learners around the world.

Origin in Special Education

Maria Montessori began her educational work with children with developmental delays at the Orthophrenic School in Rome. Through scientific observation and hands-on learning, many of her students achieved academic milestones beyond expectations.

"I studied the defects of children as a physician and as a teacher. I sought to discover their latent possibilities.”
                                                                                                        - Maria Montessori

Emphasis on Individualized Learning

Montessori education follows the child, offering personalized instruction based on developmental needs and interests. This closely mirrors the structure of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) used in special education.

Prepared Environment & Materials

Montessori classrooms feature multi-sensory, self-correcting materials in prepared environments. These attributes make the method ideal for learners with autism, ADHD, sensory processing challenges, and more.

Freedom Within Limits

Montessori philosophy nurtures autonomy, self-regulation, and choice—all of which are essential for students with behavioral or emotional needs. Respect and dignity are foundational values in both Montessori and special education.

Focus on Functionality & Life Skills

Practical life exercises support occupational therapy, speech and language development, and executive functioning. Students learn to generalize essential skills across environments.

Inclusion & Equity

Montessori education promotes inclusion, peace, and diversity. Its mixed-age classrooms and emphasis on social-emotional learning foster acceptance and support.
